Revealed: the story behind T-Sugars’ success.
With the arrival of our products in Singapore, we’re delighted to be letting a whole new audience in on a secret Belgians have known for over 175 years.
T-Sugars has been at the heart of the Belgian sugar industry since the 1830s, when Joseph Vandenberghe de Binckom established our first refinery and parent company – Raffinerie Tirlemontoise. However, our beginnings can be traced back to the naval campaigns of Napoleon Bonaparte, some 20 years earlier.
In 1806, following his defeat at the Battle of Trafalgar, Napoleon imposed a continental blockade that cut off the supply of sugar cane from Britain. As a result, sugar became such a scarce commodity that it was rarely tasted beyond the tables of nobility.
Naturally, demand from the deprived sweet-toothed masses swelled – and Joseph Vandenberghe de Binckom made it his mission to satisfy it. Raffinerie Tirlemontoise opened its doors in the May of 1836, and soon began producing the premium sugars we now know as T-Sugars.
So now you know: the foundations of the Belgian beet sugar industry were inadvertently laid by Napoleon Bonaparte. And ever since, our story has continued to be shaped by major historical events, as well as key advances in the manufacture of sugar.
