THE HISTORY OF T-SUGARS

175 years of sweet success.

From the bustling port of Antwerp to the lush Flemish countryside, T-Sugars has been at the centre of the Belgian sugar industry for over 175 years. In 1836, Joseph Vandenberghe de Binckom established Raffinerie Tirlemontoise, our first refinery and parent company - but our inspiration can be traced to Napoleon Bonaparte’s military strategy more than 20 years earlier.

A pleasure reserved for nobility.

In 1806, after his defeat in the Battle of Trafalgar, Napoleon set up a continental blockade to bring an embargo against the British import of sugar cane. Sugar became such a scarce commodity it was rarely enjoyed beyond the tables of nobility.

Never underestimate the drive of sweet-toothed masses deprived of their desserts!

Where there’s demand, innovation is sure to follow. With access to sugar cane cut off, the blockade gave birth to the beet sugar industry in Belgium. Raffinerie Tirlemontoise opened its doors in May of 1836 and soon began producing the delectable specialty sugars we now know as T-Sugars.

T-Sugars arrives in the U.S.!

From that day forth, our story has embraced major moments in European history and is entwined with key advances in the world of sugar. T-Sugars recently celebrated its 175th anniversary and now observes another landmark occasion: the arrival of T-Sugars 
products in the United States!
